SYLVANT is a medication containing the active ingredient siltuximab. Siltuximab is a monoclonal antibody, a specialized type of protein that selectively binds to an antigen called interleukin-6 (IL-6) (a target protein) in the body.
SYLVANT is used in the treatment of Multicentric Castleman's Disease (MCH) in patients diagnosed with biopsy, without carrying human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8), without significant symptoms of organ failure, increased risk of active gastric ulcer and intestinal perforation, and without additional cancer disease. MCH leads to the development of benign tumors (non-cancerous growths) in lymph nodes throughout the body. Symptoms of this disease may include fatigue, night sweats, tingling sensation, and loss of appetite.
Patients with MCH produce excessive IL-6, which is believed to contribute to abnormal cell growth in certain cells of the lymph nodes. Siltuximab binds to IL-6, inhibiting its activity and halting abnormal cell growth. This helps reduce the size of affected lymph nodes, alleviate disease symptoms, and assist you in performing your daily activities.
